Greenbird Wind Powered Vehicle Breaks World Record

What would you expect the record speed for a wind powered vehicle to be? 30 miles per hour? 60 miles per hour? Try 126.1 miles per hour! That is the record set by Richard Jenkins this past weekend at the Ivenpah Lake in Nevada, where he finally managed to do what he set out to do 10 years ago - pilot the fastest wind powered vehicle in the world.

We previously wrote about Richard and the Greenbird a few months ago when he was hoping to break the record in Western Australia. That attempt didn’t pan out due to poor conditions, so we’re excited to see that he finally achieved his goal.

The Greenbird is a carbon-fiber composite vehicle that is exclusively wind powered, making it essentially an earthbound sailboat. There were challenges involved, since at high speeds the vehicle tends to, well, take off. To counter this problem the vehicle incorporates specific design solutions, such as wings similar to those found in fomula one cars.

So now that he has achieved his first goal, what is next? Well, believe it or not, he will now try to break the record again - only this time, he will do so on ice.

Tata Motors held the commercial launch of the low-priced Tata Nano—the much-anticipated Rs 1-Lakh (about US$2,000) “People’s Car”. (Earlier post.) The Tata Nano is BS-III compliant and comes with an all-new 2-cylinder aluminium MPFI 624 cc petrol engine mated to a four-speed gear box and will be available in three variants. The cars will be on display across India at Tata Motors Passenger Car dealerships and other select authorized outlets from 1 April.

The Nano is also available in BS-II variants and is BS-IV ready. BS II, BS III and BS IV are the India mandatory norms for NOx, HC, CO and particulates. These norms are substantially aligned with the European norms Euro II, Euro III and Euro IV; the main difference is that the peak speed in the extra urban driving cycle is 90 km/h in India and 120 km/h in Europe.

Upcycled Cardboard Sculputres

Posted by Unknown in ,

These amazingly realistic, lifesize sculptures are made with nothing more than cardboard and glue. Chris Gilmour is an artist whose creativity has been captured by the idea of upcycling. He literally picks up cardboard boxes from the street and takes them into his studio to be transformed into incredibly beautiful sculptures.

Update: CARB Delays Decision, Plug-In Hybrid Conversion Startups Dodge a Bullet.

Plug-In Hybrids to be Regulated Out of Existence in California?
The movie Who Killed the Electric Cars? wasn't very tender on the California Air Resources Board (CARB). They were instrumental in the 'murder' of electric cars such as the GM EV1 and Toyota RAV4 EV in California, and now they might be about to do it again with companies that turn hybrid cars into plug-in hybrids.

Read on for more details.

Green Jobs in Obama's Stimulus Package

Posted by Unknown in , ,

President-elect Barack Obama traveled to Capitol Hill Monday to gauge congressional support of his proposed $775 billion economic stimulus package. He met with Senate and House leaders from both sides of the aisle.

The stimulus plan includes billions in tax cuts for workers and businesses and billions in tax incentives for job creation.

The president-elect urged Congress to pass the stimulus plan within one month.

The Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC) is asking its supporters to mail their Senators and Representatives a letter requesting that the stimulus plan invest in green jobs.

Magenn Air Rotor System (M.A.R.S.) is a Wind Power Anywhere™ solution with distinct advantages over existing Conventional Wind Turbines and Diesel Generating Systems including: global deployment, lower costs, better operational performance, and greater environmental advantages.

MARS is a lighter-than-air tethered wind turbine that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, generating electrical energy. This electrical energy is transferred down the 1000-foot tether for immediate use, or to a set of batteries for later use, or to the power grid. Helium sustains MARS and allows it to ascend to a higher altitude than traditional wind turbines. MARS captures the energy available in the 600 to 1000-foot low level and nocturnal jet streams that exist almost everywhere. MARS rotation also generates the "Magnus effect" which provides additional lift, keeps the MARS stabilized, and positions it within a very controlled and restricted location to adhere to FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) & Transport Canada guidelines.

A Way To Save Our Generation

Posted by Unknown in , , ,

Renewable energy are ways for us to meet our energy needs without the dependency of fossil fuels. They are replenishable power sources that have no damaging side effect when used for a long period of time which means a richer and bright future for generations to come.

Conversion of wind energy from wind turbines to produce electricity. The US added enough wind power turbines in 2007 to provide electricity for one million homes. Texas is the fastest growing wind power state.

Convert solar energy directly into electricity. This is the worlds quickest growing renewable energy technology. It has been doubling every 2 years by an average of 48% since 2002.

  • GEOTHERMAL POWER
Is energy generated by heat stored in the earth. Though as of 2008 it is only 1% of the worlds energy it is still a renewable power source. With heat coming from the earth there is no need to purchase and fuels.
